SBL advocates on behalf of students, researchers, teachers, and others interested in biblical scholarship in regard to issues such as secondary and postsecondary education, the academic workforce, and scholarly publishing. SBL also provides a number of resources for members in the workforce.

SBL is a proud sponsor of IMAGINE PHD, a free online career exploration and planning tool for PhD students, postdoctoral candidates, and scholars in the humanities and social sciences.

Support for Underrepresented Professionals
SBL maintains three committees to provide support for underrepresented professionals:
- The Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Minorities in the Profession Committee (CUREMP)
- The Status of Women in the Profession Committee (CSWP)
- The Students in the Profession Committee
